Things to Know Before Visiting Nicaragua
Nicaragua is a wonderful vacation destination for families, friends, and couples. There are excellent beaches, nice tourist towns, cloud forests, and many tourist activities and destinations. It is an easy country to visit and has amenities for all levels of travelers, from backpackers to luxury travelers. The country is very safe, contrary to the common misconceptions in the United States. A few years ago, Nicaragua was ranked as the safest country in the western hemisphere.
But one of the best reasons to visit Nicaragua is the people. The Nicaraguans are very friendly and very helpful people. They are proud of their country and are happy to share it with visitors.
Getting to Playa Coco
Playa Coco is located on the road from San Juan del Sur to Ostinal, about 12 miles from San Juan del Sur. If you are not familiar with the area, the road from San Juan to Playa Coco is unpaved and sometimes rough. A four wheel drive is highly recommended. Part of Playa Coco's appeal is that it is off the beaten path and relatively secluded, but this means it can be difficult for first time visitors. We have complete driving directions from Managua for our guests. It takes about three hours from the airport to Playa Coco for someone who knows where they are going.
Before You Arrive
Since Playa Coco is somewhat remote, you should stock up on food and supplies before arriving (the place is so nice, once you are here, you won't want to leave). There is a Pali market (small supermarket) in San Juan del Sur for supplies and food. It is conveniently located right before the turn for the road to Playa Coco.
